Thomas Roberts, 20, is BAM’s first construction apprentice on Our Cultural Heart. As an Apprentice Construction Manager, Thomas is gaining hands-on experience while working on one of the most unique projects in the region. We spoke with him about his role, the skills he’s developing, and his future aspirations within the construction industry.
Can you describe your role and responsibilities?
As an apprentice, my daily tasks are varied and I absolutely love that. I work closely with the ‘subbies’ (subcontractors) to ensure coordination across the project and monitor health and safety to make sure the site remains secure. I also keep track of the project’s progress and help find solutions to any issues that come up. Every day is different, and it’s a great way to learn all areas of construction management.
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in construction?
I’ve always been interested in construction. Growing up, my grandfather worked in the industry, which sparked my curiosity. The construction sector is always changing and forward-thinking, which makes it exciting to me. Plus, it offers long-term, clear career progression, which was a big draw for me.
What skills are you learning during your apprenticeship?
Along with practical skills, I’m learning leadership and team management, which are key to managing projects well. Effective communication and problem-solving have also been crucial, especially when unexpected challenges arise.
Are you enjoying it and the team?
Absolutely! The team has been fantastic, and from the moment I started, I felt very welcome on site. The support I’ve received has been amazing, and it’s helping me grow personally and professionally. Everybody works together, and I’ve learned so much already.
What are your future goals within the construction industry?
I can see myself staying in construction for the long term. My ultimate goal is to become a project manager. I’m looking forward to gaining more experience and progressing in this industry, which offers so many exciting opportunities and different paths.
What is special about the Our Cultural Heart project?
This project is really unique. It involves a Listed building, which means the key original structure will remain intact while being modernised. Additionally, the project features the incredible parabolic structures, the only ones of their kind in the UK, making it an exciting and complex build. I feel very lucky that my first job in construction has seen me placed on such an interesting development site.
What do you think the project will mean for Huddersfield?
The food hall and library will provide a vibrant space for education and socialising. It will not only attract more people to Huddersfield but also support local businesses and create a sense of community in the town centre.
Can you see yourself personally using the food hall and library in the future?
Since I live close to Huddersfield, I can definitely see myself using the food hall regularly with family and friends.
