18 June 2024 —
From 24 June 2024, new hoardings for Our Cultural Heart – Kirklees Council’s major mixed-use development scheme in Huddersfield town centre – will be installed around the former Queensgate Market site.
Following the hoarding installation, there will be several changes to pedestrian routes to ensure the safety of both the public and construction workers as Our Cultural Heart progresses.
Key changes include:
- The pavement on the Queensgate Market side of Peel Street will be closed.
- The two bus stops on Peel Street will be suspended until May 2025.
- Princess Alexandra Walk in the Piazza complex (from the corner of Peel Street and Ramsden Street down to Queensgate) will no longer be accessible to the public. This includes the closure of the blue stairs that previously connected Queensgate and the Piazza Shopping Centre.
- Access to the Piazza Shopping Centre will remain open from the King Street entrance.
- The pavement on the Queensgate Market side of on Queensgate will be closed.
- Parking bays on Queensgate will be closed from 31 June.
In addition to the changes in June, the crossing by Saint Paul’s Hall will be closed in September 2024. Once this closure is in place, the hoardings will be extended further down Queensgate and onto Queen Street.
We understand these changes may cause some inconvenience, but they are required to facilitate the safe and secure redevelopment of Huddersfield town centre. Kirklees Council appreciates your patience and cooperation as we work to create a vibrant town centre for everyone to enjoy.
